Sponsorships - Family Class and Refugees

Family Class Sponsorship

Your relatives can live, study and work in Canada if they become permanent residents of Canada. You can sponsor certain relatives to come to Canada if you are at least 18 years old and a:

  • Canadian citizen or
  • Person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act or
  • Permanent resident of Canada
  • Currently living in Canada OR planning to live in Canada after your sponsored family member receives the permanent resident status
  • Have enough money to sponsor your family

Refugee Sponsorship

The Private Sponsorship of Refugees (PSR) program lets private groups sponsor eligible refugees abroad. You can sponsor refugees to come to Canada if you are at least 18 years old and a:

  • Canadian citizen or
  • Person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act or
  • Permanent resident of Canada

As the private sponsor, you will support a refugee for the sponsorship period, usually up to 1 year. The support you provide will include:-

  • start-up costs, such as furniture and clothing
  • on-going monthly costs for basic necessities, including housing, food, and public transportation
  • supporting refugees socially and emotionally
